Dad and I had our evening drawing ritual last night. But before we turned on Camp Camp, we came across another show that got our attention. A liiiiittle show called "Crash Canyon."
The premise of this show is: A family of four (plus the annoying cousin) are on a road trip, but when the father isn't watching the road, they accidentally drive off the side and land in a giant canyon inhabited by other people of similar, yet different fates. The characters are pretty funny. You've got the classic "dad who tries his best to be a good dad," the "overprotective mom" (who in my opinion, they were trying to rip off Sally Botsford from Wordgirl). The one trope I REALLY hate "Technology addicted teenager" and "son that the parents sorta forget about."
Is the show another Family guy clone? ...Yes and no. Yes, they have a similar art style and stole the whole cutaway gag schtick, but the show is also trying to do its own thing, so they definitely get points for creativity.
Will we be watching more episodes tonight while dad and I write a comic about Camp Camp? Probably! After a little trip to SOOUBWAY!
What were your thoughts on the pilot last night, dad?
My take is that despite its "high concept" underpinnings, there's enough of that "If you think dat's bad, remember the time I..." flashbacks to keep it anchored firmly in FG wannabe status.
Having only seen the pilot and second episode I'm not sure how quickly the concept will burn out. If we get to like or care about any of the characters it may prove to be worthwhile. Fingers crossed.
